The introduction of Deccan Queen between the two cities of Pune and Mumbai on June 1, 1930, was a major landmark in the history of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, the forerunner of the Central Railway. This was the first deluxe train introduced on the railway to serve two important cities of the region and was aptly named after Pune, which is also known as Queen of Deccan (Dakkhan ki Rani).Initially, the train was introduced with two rakes of seven coaches each one of which was painted in silver with scarlet mouldings pwm solar charge controller and the other with royal blue with gold lines. The underframes of the coaches of the original rakes were built in England while the coach bodies were built in the Matunga Workshop of the GIP Railway. The Deccan Queen, initially, had only first class and second class accommodation. First class was abolished on January 1, 1949 and second class was redesigned as first class, which continued up to June 1955 when third class was introduced on this train for the first time. This was later re-designated as second class from April 1974 onwards.

The coaches of the original rakes were replaced in 1966 by anti-telescopic steel bodied integral coaches built by Integral Coach Factory, Perambur. These coaches incorporated the improved design of bogies for better riding comfort and also improvements in the interior furnishings and fittings.

New Delhi: Suzuki Motor Corporation said it was no longer gung-ho about India’s auto market, the world’s fourth-largest, where it has seen relentless growth in the past seven years. And the parent of the country’s biggest car maker is not alone. The Japanese automaker issued the warning after it reported a slump in quarterly profit this week on tumbling sales at its Indian unit, Maruti Suzuki, which accounts for half the number of cars sold in India.“We no longer think that growth in India will be an uninterrupted move upwards,” Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki cautioned. Maruti’s sales, which were growing till January, has slipped every month over February-September 2019.India’s auto sector has gone into a tailspin this year as tight liquidity at shadow banks, high taxes and a weak rural economy have sapped consumers’ buying power.

Global players like Ford, Volkswagen and Fiat are already re-evaluating their strategy as they struggle to make inroads in a market dominated by small cars.“Car makers are getting very cautious regarding their future investments in India. Most of them are either deferring or just scrapping their India new model plans,” said Puneet Gupta, an autos sector expert at IHS Markit.Auto executives and analysts point out that some car makers are focussing on their strengths in terms of products instead of chasing volumes with small cars. Some others are taking drastic steps to reduce their exposure.Ford has agreed to sell a majority stake in its India arm to Mahindra Mahindra, ending its independent operations in the country after two decades and highlighting the challenges automakers face in growing profitably in Asia’s third-largest economy.Dialling backA cocktail of higher taxes under a new goods and services tax regime, flip-flop over electric-vehicle policy, and a boom of ride-sharing firms such as Uber and Ola have all plagued global automakers in India.

Salman Khan was acquitted of all charges in the 2002 hit-and-run case. Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Thursday acquitted Salman Khan in the 2002 hit-and-run case. Khan's former bodyguard, Ravindra Patil, in his version, had stated that the actor was behind the wheel and speeding. The judge, however, was not convinced and said the statement was "not wholly reliable", citing "various anomalies in his testimony".Justice A.R. Joshi, who is hearing the appeal filed by Salman against his conviction for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, during dictation, said that there are three categories of witnesses in criminal cases.

One is wholly reliable, the second is partially reliable, while the third is unreliable and for partially reliable witnesses, there should be corroborative evidence to prove the witness’ testimony. “In the opinion of this court, Mr Patil is not a wholly reliable witness,” said the judge, adding that there has to be corroboration of evidence.According to the judge, apart from Patil, no other witness had said that the appellant (Salman) was driving the car and that he was drunk at the time of the incident and hence, there is no corroborative evidence to support Patil’s claim. The judge also noted that Patil did not say anything about the actor being in a drunken state in his first statement.

Owning a luxury car in India is akin to maintaining a white elephant. High-end vehicle owners tell us about the problems they face while keeping the cars up and running in MumbaiWhen Dipa Karmakar performed the Produnova, or the vault of death, in the Rio Olympics in August, she held an entire country under her spell. Despite the fact that she missed out on a medal by a whisker, Dipa was showered with awards and accolades when she returned home. Amongst the awards was a BMW X1, given to her by the Hyderabad Badminton Association, and presented by Sachin Tendulkar. The problem, explained Dipa’s father, Dulal Karmakar, was that there isn’t a service centre for BMW in the state of Tripura, and the condition of roads in her native Agartala are not good enough for the vehicle to be driven on.

Dipa’s predicament is not hers alone. Luxury car owners in and around the metropolitan city of Mumbai too groan when recounting how much of a nightmare maintaining a high-end fleet of cars is.“It’s quite tough to maintain a luxury car in India,” sighs Gaurav Pareek, a city-based investor, who formerly owned a Porsche Boxster. “You need to think twice before taking the car out. The roads here are so bad. Just last week, my car hit a pothole, and the right suspension started making noises. I had to open it up and have it checked.”Businessman Damandeip Singh Chadha too believes that the city roads are the bane of every luxury car owner’s lives. “Any car that costs more than `1 crore, or is low slung is affected by our pathetic roads. We don’t have potholes on the roads, we have roads on the potholes. I suffer from slipped disc, and these roads are bad for my health.
